All the way to WA - Waving goodbye

 Day 18 August 10, 2023

We packed up and left Esperance this morning, driving by the Rotary Lookout to gaze at the lovely vista (Wallsy’s word!) once more. 

As we are a driver down due to illness, Wallsy took the wheel first and drove to Ravensthorpe for a lunch stop, which was the halfway point for today’s trip. The road trip was quiet and thankfully uneventful, and we made it to Ravensthorpe in good time for lunch. As soon as I had finished the sausage roll, I had chosen however, I regretted it. The solid, fatty lump, sat heavily in my stomach, and the strange tasting coffee, added to the uncomfortable mix, as I climbed back in the car for the next two-hour leg.

Nicki drove the next two hours to Wave Rock. The rain had started before we arrived, but it was only light and didn’t deter us from getting out of the car to explore this quite remarkable geological feature. After viewing the headline act, Wallsy and I climbed onto Hyden Rock to complete the walk across the top and explore its unusual topography.

After about an hour and a half here, we met up again, and climbed back in the car to move on to Hyden Hotel/Motel, our accommodation for the night, which was only 5 minutes down the road. Rested and fed, we are relaxing in our rooms, preparing for the final day of our travels tomorrow, as we all fly home from Perth early Saturday morning.

Wallsy and I had a moment of inspiration as we drove home from the airport last night  - we decided we should form our own travel agency to be called ‘Not According to Plan Travel’. It seems appropriate, as it has definitely been the theme of most of our recent travel experiences, dating as far back as the halcyon days of 2019 when we had to abandon the UK early and make a dash home, answering the call of ill mothers. Coast to Coast UK - Robin Hoods Bay to home

Anyone who knows me well, knows that 3 weeks is my upper limit for being away from home. By the time I get to 3 weeks, I am itching to be back in my safe space, in the same country as my family and the people I love, no matter how great the travel experience I am having. I have been known to push through the homesickness and make it to 5 weeks, but it’s a stretch. The fact that I have been away from home for 4 weeks and 3 days now, is a miracle in itself, but add to that the fact that I had to leave one beautiful grandson behind, and while I have been away, another grandson has been added to the family, that I have managed to remain absent this long, is a miracle worthy of a sainthood. But I am at Heathrow airport as I write, and will soon be winging my way back home, albeit without Wallsy. Dreaming of a White Christmas - Day 3

Change of Plans There were patches of blue sky and sunshine evident this morning and the snowfall seemed to have stopped overnight, so we packed our bags and went down to breakfast with the vague hope that the trains might be running after all. Discussions over breakfast centred around the cost of Ubers to take us to Passau where we were due to meet the bus that would take us over the border and into Austria mid-afternoon, to meet our Danube Cruise ship, a-rosa BELLA. First things first, Stephen walked over to the railway station to assess the situation regarding train travel. News came back swiftly that all trains for the next hour were still cancelled, so rather than take any risks we opted to book two Ubers which would take us on the two-and-a-half-hour journey to meet our cruise.
